In the era of the Warring States, where tomorrow was always
uncertain, there emerged a heightened awareness of living each
day to its fullest. This sentiment was captured in the depictions of
the daily lives of ordinary people in artwork. The artists, for reasons
unknown, often left their works unsigned. These anonymous pieces
are collectively referred to as ‘Early Modern Period Genre
Paintings.’ From this foundation, Ukiyo-e emerged as a celebrated
art form during the subsequent era of peace and stability.
