江戸絵画は、政治的・地理的に大きな変遷と安定を迎えた時代の中で発展を遂げました。特徴として、特権・支配階級のものだったものに、一般庶民が加わったことが大きく、トラディショナルなものからアマチュアリズム、エンターテイメント性が溢れるものまで、様々な画家・流派の手により魅力的な作品が生まれました。
今回、当財団のコレクションより代表的な作品に加え、各画題をコンセプトに選出しました。その異なる味わいをお楽しみください。

Torii school
鳥居派
初代清信により始まった鳥居派は、役者絵を得意としました
現代までその画風は受け継がれ、今も歌舞伎座の玄関に鳥居派の
役者絵が飾られております
The Torii school, founded by the first-generation Kiyonobu,
specialized in actor portraits.
Its artistic style has been passed down to the present day, and
even now, portraits in the Torii style adorn the entrance of the
Kabuki-za theater.

Hakkenden
八犬伝
小説家・山田風太郎（1992～ 2001）は、曲亭馬琴（1767～ 1848）
の創作「南総里見八犬伝」を題材にして、小説「八犬伝」を著しました。
小説「八犬伝」の「実の世界」には、曲亭馬琴・太田蜀山人・葛飾北斎・葛飾応為・
山東京伝・式亭三馬・蔦屋重三郎・伊勢屋兼吉など、多彩な人物が登場します。
The novelist Futaro Yamada (1922‒2001) wrote the novel “Hakkenden”, based on
“Nanso Satomi Hakkenden”, the work of Kyokutei Bakin (1767‒1848).
In the “real world” depicted in “Hakkenden”, a diverse cast of historical figures appears,
including Kyokutei Bakin, Ota Shokusanjin, Katsushika Hokusai, Katsushika Oi, Santo Kyoden,
Shikitei Sanba, Tsutaya Juzaburo, and Iseya Kanekichi.

懐月堂派
菱川師宣にやや遅れて登場した懐月堂安度は、弟子らを率いて肉筆画を量産しました
大柄な一人立の美人図を得意とし、その画風を慕う絵師達も数多く登場しました
Following somewhat after Hishikawa Moronobu, Kaigetsudou Ando
emerged and led his disciples in producing a large number of
hand-painted artworks. He specialized in portraits of large, standing
beauties, and many artists appeared who admired and emulated his style.

The phrase “花鳥風月” means flowers, birds, wind, and the moon,
often reflecting changing seasons and evoking emotions, and just as Japanese are drawn to the moon.
Alongside the moon, humans and all living beings are depicted in harmony with nature.
